Abstract

The development of self-healing asphalt mixtures represents an innovative technological approach to improving pavement durability and reducing the frequency of maintenance interventions. This study evaluated the behaviour of asphalt mixtures modified with graphene nanoplatelets (GNP, 99%) and mixtures incorporating both GNP and end-of-life tyre rubber (ELT), analysing their response to a microwave-induced self-healing process. To this end, the modified binders and the asphalt mixtures produced using these materials were characterised.

The self-healing capacity was assessed by means of the indirect tensile strength (ITS) test, comparing the values obtained before and after the application of the microwave treatment. The results showed that the incorporation of GNP and ELT modified the rheological properties of the binder. Furthermore, the asphalt mixtures exhibited improvements in terms of density and stability.

Self-healing rates ranged from 79% to 83% for the asphalt mixtures incorporating modified binders, outperforming those produced with conventional asphalt, which achieved a rate of 66%. Overall, the results demonstrate that the incorporation of GNP, both individually and in combination with ELT, significantly enhances the mechanical performance and self-healing capacity of asphalt mixtures.
