Abstract

Cracking of asphalt pavements is one of the most frequent causes of deterioration. Due to the rheological characteristics of asphalt mixtures, their crack behavior is complex to analyze, since the material behaves differently when faced with climatic and traffic stresses. The objective of this work is to determine fatigue resistance, by means of the SCB test (Simply Supported Semicircular Beam) on conventional hot asphalt mixtures, dosed with the same aggregates and a granulometric curve, varying the asphalt cement.

A manual molding methodology with percussion hammer is proposed, as an alternative to that proposed by international regulations, where the rotary compactor is used.

The results indicate that a CAC D19 asphalt mix with 4.3% CA20 asphalt modified with 2.66% NFU and 2% SBS, offers better cracking behavior. And that the proposed manual molding methodology offers a good alternative when the rotary compactor is not available.
